Local Area - Our property is in the centre of the village of Piscokefalo 4 km from Sitia, regional capital of Eastern Crete. The village has one general store and one minimarket with an excellent bakery and butcher. There is one taverna, with a kafienon (men only)a pizzeria and one other cafe all in the village square which is the centre of village life. 4km away is Sitia, the regional capital with many excellent waterfront restaurants, a picturesque harbour , many shops and an excellent market every Tuesday. Sitia is also renowned for excellent cakeshops, olive oil and wine. Our property can also be used as a base for exploring Eastern Crete attractions including the Toplou Monastery, the famous palm fringed beach at Vai, Minoan ruins at Kato Zakros and mountain villages which have changed little in the last 60 years. Sitia has a good sandy beach but the best in the area is at Makrigalios on the south coast some 45 minutes drive away - very good for small children. A hire car is recommended but theer is a daily bus service to and from Sitia and also running through to the south coast 3 or 4 times a day. The area is also good for walking and cycling.

Local Events - Sitia market is every Tuesday and sells almost anything. Every August there is a sultana festival in Sitia and at advertised intervals there is a "Sound and Light" show at the Venetian Fortress there (see the Tourist Office for details). From the commercial harbour at Sitia it is possible to catch a ferry to other parts of Crete and up towards Pireaus and also to Kassos, Karpathos and Rhodes. The Sitia airport also has flights to these destinations.

Travel overview - From Heraklion Airport a drive to Sitia and then to the property will take about 2 hours non stop. We recommend a short stop along the way and usually stop ourselves at Ammoudara just beyond Aghios
